The release of iOS 18.1 brings the first wave of Apple Intelligence features to supported devices. These include built-in writing tools, easy-to-use image editing features and powerful ways to summarise your notifications and messages. You can learn how these features work by exploring these new QuickTip videos.

This book shares 100 tips & tricks to get the most from your iPhone now you're running iOS 18.

Remove Distracting Objects and People from Photographs

With Photo Clean Up, you can use Apple Intelligence to remove distracting objects or even people from your photographs, allowing you to focus on what matters the most to you. This tool will automatically recommend items to remove, but can also be used to circle or colour over any object you want gone.

Create Personalised Memory Movies from your Photos and Videos

One of my favourite things in the Photos app is when it creates a Memory Movie of a special event for you. Perhaps your birthday over the years or a holiday to the beach. Well, with Apple Intelligence, you can now create your own bespoke Memory Movies by simply typing in what you'd like your movie to be about. And yes, my iPhone is now FULL of cat movies!

Easily Censor Faces in Photographs using Safety Filter

A hidden but useful feature of the Photos Clean Up tool is the ability to quickly add a pixelated blur to a persons face by simply circling it. This can be useful for when you want to share a photo but don't want the person in the background to be obvious or, if you're a teacher like me, it's a huge time saver when it comes to sharing group photos where some students can be on the school website and some can't.

Get Automatically Summarised Notifications - Even from Group Chats!

With Apple Intelligence, you now have the option to enable Notification Summaries— a clever feature that will give you the key points of each notification as they arrive. But more than that, it’ll also group together similar notifications and offer a general summary of everything you’ve missed in a particular app or conversation, making those big group chats and email threads much more manageable!

Reduce Distractions by Hiding Unimportant Notifications

If you’re a user of Focus Modes, you’re really going to like this new feature: Reduce Interruptions. This tool uses Apple Intelligence to decide which of your notifications are important or time-sensitive and which can safely wait until later. You don’t need to go through each app manually (although you can exclude apps and people if you’d like), making it a quick and simple way to reduce distractions when using your devices.

Proofread and Grammar Check your Writing

For the first time, there’s a powerful proofreader and grammar checker built right into iOS and iPadOS. That means you don’t have to use a third-party app or service to check emails before sending or proofread an essay you’re writing - it’s now built right in as part of Writing Tools. And the best part? These tools workeverywhere you can type text on iPhone and iPad.

Summarise and Extract Key Points from Text

Another useful writing tool which comes as part of Apple Intelligence will let you quickly summarise a large piece of text down to a couple of sentences, or extract a list of bullet points from within the writing. This content can then be pasted elsewhere (or used to replace the original writing should you desire).

Adjust your Writing with Writing Styles

Writing Styles helps you change the tone of the words you’ve written, without losing their meaning. You can make your email sound more professional or an iMessage sound more friendly - with just the tap of a button. And if, like me, you tend to ramble on a bit, you can make your writing more concise too.

Type to Talk with the New Look Siri

Despite the big changes to Siri coming in a later update to iOS 18, there are still some notable updates with this initial release. For starters, you can now interact with Siri silently and discretely using the new Type to Talk interface. This means you can talk to and complete tasks with Siri without having to use your voice - perfect for times like meetings or when other people are asleep!

Use Siri to Solve Tech Support Issues

Another nice little update to Siri is that your virtual assistant now has the ability to help you solve tech queries on your device, simple by asking. This works because Siri now understands the Apple Support Guides for each product and can offer step-by-step instructions to solving certain problems. And for any problem Siri can't help with, there's always Jacob's QuickTips!

Summarise the Content of your Emails and Email Inbox

The use of Apple Intelligence in Mail might be one of my favourites in that it turns your inbox into a far more actionable and useful list of messages than ever before. You see, rather than displaying the first two or three lines of a message as the message preview Apple Intelligence will now provide a complete summary of each email instead. Not only that, but when you open a message you can get a more detailed summary simply with the tap of a button.
