Description

In this video, I’ll show you how to use the new Siri text input feature on iOS 18.1, which lets you type commands instead of speaking them. This feature is perfect for when you need to interact with Siri discreetly, like in a meeting or a quiet space. I’ll demonstrate how to access the text box, complete tasks like HomeKit automation and checking the weather, and view calendar events – all without saying a word.

Transcript

With the new Siri on iOS 18.1 and later, I can now use my keyboard to interact with Siri. That means I don’t have to talk out loud – so if I’m in a meeting or somewhere quiet, I can do it much more discreetly. All I need to do is double-tap on the Home bar indicator at the bottom of the screen, and then I can simply start typing into this new Siri text box. For example, I can ask it to do a HomeKit automation, like turning on my office lights, and it’ll do it just like normal.

You’ll also see some suggestions as you start typing. If I type into the box again and begin searching for weather, you’ll see it come up as an option. Tapping on it will then show the weather in my location. Of course, this works for anything you can ask Siri to do by voice – you can now do it by typing.

For my last example, I’ll simply type, “Have I got any meetings today?” and just like that, it will display my calendar with any events marked as meetings. The Siri update on iOS 18.1 is only going to get bigger and better over time as more intelligent features are built into Siri.
