On my iPhone, I want to try and keep my battery healthy for as long as I can so my iPhone will last for as many years as possible. There’s a new feature in iOS 18 that will help make sure your battery doesn’t overcharge itself, hopefully prolonging its life. In the Settings app, I’m going to jump straight to Battery, and here you can see my battery usage over the last day and the last 10 days. It actually looks like my phone has never used more than 75% battery in those last 10 days, so potentially charging it to 100% is actually a bit wasteful. I’m charging the battery but not necessarily needing it.
I want to keep my battery health as strong as possible, so what I’m going to do is go to the charging options here, and this is where we can make a change to our settings. On this screen, you can see that at the moment my iPhone charges to 100% every night. That means when it goes on the charger, it will just charge until it’s completely full. But actually, it’s recommending that the maximum limit should be 85% for me in my iPhone. This is because I don’t need that full battery, so by charging it a little bit less, it should prolong the lifespan of the device.
I’m going to accept this change, and you’ll see it jumps to 85%, but of course, I can fine-tune this if I want to. This is different from the optimised battery charging; that’s where it will charge for a certain amount and then do the last bit just before you start using your phone for the day. This will actually change the maximum limit it will charge up to. Of course, if you need a full 100% battery, you can go back to this screen the night before and put it back to 100%. Maybe you’re going out for a long day or to a festival or something; you can change it to 100% before you go, thereby meaning you’re not going to lose any battery.
