Description

In this video, I’ll show you how to use the new Insights feature in the iOS 18 Journal app. With this update, you can see stats, charts, and data that reveal how much you’ve been journaling, where you’ve been, and even trends like your writing streaks. The Insights feature gives you an overview of your journaling activity with intuitive cards and a handy calendar to track your progress. Whether you’re curious about your habits or looking to fill in gaps, this new feature offers a useful peek behind the curtain of your Journal usage.

Transcript

The Journal app for iOS 18 has got a new feature called Insights that gives you a peek behind the curtain of what you’re using Journal for. It offers lots of nice stats, graphs, charts, and all those sorts of good things. You can access this by pressing the ‘More’ button – that’s the three dots in the top right – and then going to Insights, or you can simply tap that small Journal Insights bar at the top of your screen.

From there, you’ll get this nice screen that almost looks like widgets or cards, and it’ll give you an overview of how much you’ve used Journal – or in my case, how much I haven’t used Journal! If I tap onto any of the squares, they’ll get bigger and show more information, and if there are any related posts, I can jump to them straight away as well. For example, when I tap on the ‘Visited Locations’ area here, I get a few places I’ve been to recently. If I tap on ‘Theatre’, it will then take me to two posts that I’ve tagged at a theatre. I can then go back and continue using Insights mode to find streaks, see how many words I’ve written, and lots of different data points that you might find interesting.

At the very bottom of that Insights page, you’ve got a calendar, and you’ll see a little dot on every single day where you’ve added a journal entry. This is a really good way if you want to go back and fill in missing spaces to make sure you’ve got a complete journal, or if you just want to see when you’ve been journaling most. As you’d expect, tapping on any of those dates in the calendar will take you to the journal entries from that day.

And that’s just a small update in iOS 18, but it makes your iPhone a little bit more interesting and more useful.
