In this short tutorial I’m going to show you how to turn a photograph into a lovely piece of Duotone art – just like this – which would look amazing as a phone wallpaper or even a printed image on your wall.
So we’re going to use the Pixelmator Photo app and I’m going to open up this lovely picture of my cat Polly in our garden.
Now, the first thing I want to do for this image is to crop it down to a square, so I’m just going to quickly make sure I frame the image that I want and then I’m going to crop it and press the tick to save.
From here we’re then going to go off the Filters button (which is this one on the top toolbar).
On here there are lots of different options and different ways you can edit your picture, but scroll right the way down at the bottom to where it says LUT – L-U-T.
From here you’ve got two different options: you can apply a LUT itself (that’s a kind of a photo style if you like) and then you can change the intensity with which that applies.
So I’m going to tap on the different LUT options and from here we can go straight onto Duotone.
As you’ll see as I tap through these different options it will immediately apply that effect to the picture and some of them look really quite striking.
I think with this photo I like the blue and yellow one the most so I’m going to go back and choose that one now, and then like I said before you can change the intensity using that slider.
For me I think 100% actually looks the best because it completely recolours that image.
Now as I zoom in a little bit to my original photo I’m going to add one more effect called Grain.
So we’ll scroll down that list of filters and at the bottom we’re going to turn on Grain, and we’re going to make sure we bump it up a little bit with both sliders.
This will give a really lovely textured finish to my photograph, and now I’ve got my wallpaper image ready to go.
All I need to do is press the Tick and then press Modify to save it back to my Camera Roll.
