Description
In this video, I’ll show you a brilliant new feature in iOS 18.1: Type to Siri. Now, you can interact with Siri by typing commands instead of speaking them, which is perfect for when you need to be quiet, like in a meeting or at night. I’ll walk you through how to access this feature, send commands, and even follow up with additional tasks without saying a word.
Transcript
The updated Siri on iOS 18.1, which is linked to Apple Intelligence, has a really helpful but somewhat hidden feature: you can now interact with it by typing rather than talking out loud. This is especially useful if you want to do things quietly, such as at night or during a meeting, without disturbing anyone around you.
To access the new Type to Siri interface, simply double-tap on the Home indicator at the bottom of your screen – that’s the thin horizontal bar that appears in every app. Once you double-tap, the keyboard will appear along with Siri’s glow, and you’ll immediately see some suggestions, or you can just type in your command as you normally would. For example, I can ask Siri to turn off the lights in the lounge, and as soon as I press send, Siri will carry out the command as it would when speaking.
Of course, if you start the conversation by typing, Siri will respond in text instead of speaking out loud, which is the point of using this feature quietly. You can also ask follow-up questions or give additional commands, and Siri will continue to respond in writing.
Additionally, the suggestions above the text box are really handy. For instance, if I tap on What can I do?, Siri will give me a list of different ways it can assist me with tasks on my iPhone.
Being able to interact with Siri by typing is a fantastic feature. As I mentioned, it’s perfect for when you want to be discreet, but there are even more features coming as Apple Intelligence continues to roll out.
