There’s a really useful feature in the Instagram app that’s pretty hidden, but it will let you customise what you see on your feeds. And on the Reels tab, we can actually now edit the algorithm in the Instagram app to tell it what you want to see more of or less of. And it’s really useful.

So jump onto Reels here, and in the top right-hand corner, there’s like a little slider option with two hearts on. Tap onto here and you’ll get an overview from Instagram of what it thinks you currently like, based on the algorithm that it’s got trained on you. Things that you look at often, whether it’s cat videos or travel vlogs, whatever it might be, they should show up here at the top.

Now, the clever thing is there are some that it knows for sure and some that it thinks you might like. You can tap on there, like Mobile Technology, and it will add it to the ones that it knows that you like. So, you can basically teach it what you want to see more of.

And of course, we can type in and manually add things as well. So, travel perhaps, or YouTube advice, and it will make sure to surface more of those things for me in my feeds.

Conversely, we can also have things appear less often. So, we can either drag and drop, or tap and hold and say Show Less Often, and it will go to the bottom half of this page. These are things which Instagram’s going to try and filter out for you as much as possible so you see less of them.
