The Photos app has had a huge redesign in iOS 18, and it changes how a lot of features work while adding some really exciting new ones that make browsing your photo library more enjoyable than before. One of these is the new ‘Day-by-Day’ view that I find myself using a lot since I’ve been on iOS 18.
In the past, when you had your whole photo library at the bottom, you could choose between Years, Months, and Days, which helped you easily navigate through different photos in your library. But with the new Day-by-Day view, if I go underneath my photo grid, it’ll show up as one of the options down below. Tapping on it then gives me a breakdown of every single day where I’ve taken photos or videos. From here, I can simply tap onto a day to get a full-screen experience and relive what I did. That means I can swipe down and browse my photos, where some are highlighted and larger than others, and of course, I can tap onto them to explore further.
You can also automatically have a little movie created—a memory of that day—which the Photos app will make for you. Tapping on this will then start playing a lovely little video with music that brings those photos to life for me in a slightly different way. My favourite part about this is when you’ve got videos in your photo library; they will automatically play as part of the memory movie, and I think that’s just a really cool way of browsing your media.
At the bottom of the screen, when you’re out of the movie, you can also choose to view all the pictures from that day, not just the highlights that Photos has chosen for you. The Day-by-Day view doesn’t just start appearing when you update to iOS 18. As your photo library gets analysed, it will go back and create daily views for all your previous photos, which means you can dive into those memory movies from loads of different times in your life—and that’s really fun.
There are loads more features in Photos and iOS 18 generally that will make your phone better and more enjoyable to use.
