Description
Got a favourite photo that just won’t fit your iPhone Lock Screen without an awkward crop? iOS 27 has a brilliant new AI feature called Extend, where Apple Intelligence generates matching detail to fill the gaps when you zoom out on a photo. I’ll show you how to use it to make any image cover your whole Lock Screen, and why it works so well on busy photos, keeping your clock and widgets clear.

iOS 27 brings a couple of new ways to customise your Lock Screen. And one of them is really particularly useful, because you can now take any photo and use the built-in Extend feature to make it automatically fill your whole Lock Screen. That means you can zoom out and reposition and really make it look as aesthetic as you like. I’ll show you how this works, and don’t worry, it’s really simple.
But before I do that, if you don’t know me yet, then hi, my name is Jacob. I’m your friendly Apple expert here on YouTube, to help you make the most of your iPhone. You can press subscribe and you won’t miss any QuickTips in the future.
Okay, so I’m on my Lock Screen here, and I’m going to edit it by long-pressing, and let’s make a brand new Lock Screen by pressing the plus in the bottom corner. From here, we can choose any starting point we like, but really I want to use a photo, because that’s where the new feature comes in.
So, I’m going to tap onto Photos at the top here, and I’m going to go for Cities as the category. Obviously, you can use any photo in your library. In fact, you can even share a photo to your Lock Screen and it will still work. But let’s go for this one of Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. Now, I love this photo, but it is really quite busy, and if I make it nice and big, it will make the clock quite hard to see at the top there. So, really, what I want to do is zoom out and have some more sky above the photo, but I didn’t take it with more sky at the top.
Well, as soon as you zoom out on iOS 27, you’re going to see a kind of blurred, moving border at the top and the bottom there. And this is where Apple Intelligence comes in. In fact, you can simply tap onto Extend on the screen, and in a few seconds it will make that photo fill the whole page, by using AI to generate what could be at the top and the bottom of your image.
Because it’s quite neutral and quite plain, it really makes the clock stand out, and any widgets there look great as well. And this works on any photo on the Lock Screen.
So, give it a try. But before you go, don’t forget to subscribe, and you might want to come back and check out this QuickTip later.
