Description

Yes, the title sounds click-baity, but trust me – this works. In this short tutorial I’ll show you how to create your own Customised Spatial Audio Profile (that’ll sync across all your devices through iCloud) to improve your AirPods experience dramatically. It’ll recognise the shape of your ears by scanning them with your FaceID Camera and will then be able to customise the audio output in each ear to best suit you. It sounds impossible, but it works!

Transcript

Did you know there’s a setting tucked away that can improve spatial audio on your AirPods? Here’s how it works. So, in the Settings app, with your AirPods connected, you should see a menu option at the top with your AirPods Pro or AirPods listed. On this screen, you can change all the normal settings for your AirPods, like Transparency Mode. But if you scroll down towards the bottom, there’s a special option called ‘Personalize Spatial Audio’.

Now, this is going to use the Face ID camera on your phone, so it needs to be an iPhone X or later. It’s going to do a scan of your ears to make sure that the spatial audio sounds as good as it can in your ears. It sounds a bit weird, doesn’t it? But it does make a difference.

So, when you go onto here, it’s quite like the Face ID setup process. The first thing to do is to do a full scan of the front of your face, just like this, by moving your head slowly in a circle. The scanner is able to capture a 3D image of the front of your face. Then, when you go onto the next step, you’ll be invited to hold your phone towards the side of your head so your right ear can be scanned. You don’t have to hold it right up to your ear, but all you’re going to do is gently turn your head back and forth like this to scan your ear. You’ll hear a little noise like this when it’s done.

And then, you’ve probably guessed it, you’ll scan your left ear as well. So, on the next stage, you’ll hold your phone to the left-hand side of your head and you’ll just slowly turn it again like that. And that’s all you have to do. Personalized spatial audio is now set up for you, and it will synchronize across your iCloud devices. I’m pretty sure it sounds better to my ears when turned on compared to when it’s turned off.

I’d love to know what you think in the comments down below. And don’t forget, there are hundreds more tips for your iPhone on my channel, so make sure you go and subscribe next.
