The Standby feature in iOS 17 is brilliant – when you put your iPhone horizontally on the charger it will show a bigger clock or a big widget, whatever you decide you want to have.

But it also works at night time.

Now, if you’ve got your phone beside your bed charging you may not want it to be really bright and in your face – in fact I certainly wouldn’t if I’m trying to sleep.

So we’re going to use Night Mode on Standby.

To get this set up we’re first going to go into the Settings app and we’re going to scroll down until we find Standby.

From here there’s an option in the middle called Night Mode and you’re going to turn Night Mode on if it isn’t already.

There’s also the option to wake when movement is detected and that means your phone screen will go completely off until you start moving your hand in front of it or until you wake up, at which point it will light up with the red tone that I’ll show you in a minute.

Okay, with those two settings enabled all that’s left to do is to go to bed!

Night Mode automatically comes on when the room is dark enough, it is not based on time or alarm or anything else it’s just based on the ambient light in the room.

So with it on my nightstand if I turn the lights off you’ll see Night Mode turns on and you can see Night Mode has this really rich red color.

Rather than being brighten and in your face it’s quite subtle, the screen brightness goes down so it won’t disturb you when you’re sleeping.

If you leave this for about a minute or so the screen will go off completely until you then wave your hand in front of it (if you turn that option on).

And that’s just another thing that iOS 17 does that makes your phone better than ever.
