Description
Driving an electric or hybrid car and worried about where you’ll charge? Apple Maps on CarPlay can search your planned route for charging stations, some even showing live charging status, so you can plan exactly where and when to stop. I’ll show you how to use Add Stop to find a charging point along your journey and slot it straight into your route, plus the other stops it can find, like petrol stations and cafes.

So, I’ve just got an electric car. Well, a plug-in hybrid, technically. And it’s got me thinking a lot about where I can charge, especially living down in Cornwall. Well, Apple CarPlay has got a really good solution built in that can show you electric charging points along the route you’re planning to drive, so you can plan when and where you need to stop. Let me show you how it works.
And if you’re new around here, then hi, my name’s Jacob. I’m your friendly Apple teacher. I normally make iPhone and iPad videos, but I do CarPlay and Mac as well. So, please do subscribe if you want some more.
Okay, so in CarPlay, we’re going to open up our Maps app as normal, and we’re just going to plot the route we want to drive. I’m going from Newquay Airport down to St Michael’s Mount, a nice drive right across Cornwall, but I want to find a charging station on the way somewhere.
So, when I’ve put in the route that I want to drive, I’m going to choose the particular road and just press Go like normal. But at this point, we’re going to swipe up or tap on the little control panel in the bottom right-hand corner of CarPlay. This is the one that shows you your arrival time and the hours left in the drive.
Now, when you swipe up on here, we get a few different options. We’re going to tap onto Add Stop. And when we tap onto there, we can actually search for any location that we want. But Apple Maps has got some features built in to help you find electric charging stations, petrol stations, even cafes and coffee shops on your route. So, I’m going to tap onto Charging Stations here.
And Apple Maps is going to use my planned route all the way through Cornwall to find locations nearby or on the route itself, no more than a couple of miles off. Then we can scroll through that list of locations. Some are even updated live as to charging status. And if we find one we like the look of, we can simply add it to our route.
Then when I go to my map overview, and I can see the whole trip, you can see it’s added in that charging stop for me nicely towards the end of my drive.
I hope that’s been helpful. I’m making lots more videos, and some more on CarPlay as well. So please do subscribe and then check out this video next.
