Description

Your iPhone is part of a global emergency alert system, and while that loud siren is useful in a real emergency, there are plenty of reasons you might not want it going off. I’ll show you exactly where to find Emergency Alerts on your iPhone, explain the difference between Severe Alerts and Emergency Alerts, and show you how to turn off one or both. Just remember that switching them off means you may miss important safety information.

Transcript

Did your iPhone just make that terrifying siren noise? Well, here’s how to stop it happening again.

The iPhone is part of a global emergency alert system. And whilst that can be incredibly useful in a genuine emergency, there are many reasons why you might decide that you don’t want those alerts appearing on your phone in the future.

Let me show you where you can go in Settings to change these options.

Open up the Settings app and then tap onto Notifications. Now, scroll right to the bottom of all of your apps, which might take a while, until you find Emergency Alerts.

Here, you’ll find two options: Severe Alerts and Emergency Alerts. Severe alerts are typically used for things like dangerous weather warnings, whilst emergency alerts are reserved for the most serious emergencies.

You can choose whether to leave both enabled, disable one, or turn them both off completely.

And once you’ve made your choice, that’s it. Your iPhone will follow those settings going forwards. Just bear in mind that by disabling them, you may miss important emergency information in the future.
