Description

Instead of scrolling endlessly through doorbell footage, you can now search your home camera clips on iPhone by what’s in them, whether that’s a person, a parcel delivery or the neighbours’ cat. I’ll show you how to turn on Apple Intelligence video descriptions in the iOS 27 Home app, which brings all your HomeKit Secure Video cameras into one searchable timeline. I’ll also cover the devices and iCloud+ plan you’ll need.

Transcript

If you’re someone like me who loves using the Home app on their iPhone to keep track of the cameras around the house, you’re going to love this brand-new feature in iOS 27, where you can now search all of your clips. It makes organising your home security better than ever.

And before I show you how it works, if you’re new around here, then hi, my name is Jacob. I’m your friendly Apple expert here on YouTube to help you make the most of your devices. So, if you like QuickTips like this, please do press subscribe, then you won’t miss any in the future.

Okay, so I’m going to show you how this works, but also how to enable it if it’s not on your phone yet. So stick around for that part later, and then you can get this working just like I have today.

So, in the Home app, I’ve got the camera feeds at the top like normal. If I tap on one of those cameras, I get the same sort of playback screen that I always used to. I can swipe sideways and see the different clips. The difference now is that all of my cameras are combined into one place, which makes it easier to jump forwards and backwards through time.

But in the bottom right-hand corner is a brand-new search box. If you tap on there, we can then search through all of the clips that are stored in the Home app. We could search for a person. We could search for “delivery” or “parcel”. We could search for “cat”. And you’re going to see all of the videos that have been tagged with that particular word. So now my wife can spy on all the neighbours’ cats as they go past our house. She is delighted.

But this might not be set up for you straight away on your phone, so let’s have a quick talk about that. First of all, this does require Apple Intelligence, and you need to have a home hub device, so an iPad, Apple TV or HomePod, and it needs to be up to date with iOS 27. You also need to be an iCloud+ subscriber. If you’re not, it doesn’t give you access to this, which is really frustrating in my opinion.

But assuming you have got all of those things, from the main screen of the Home app, tap the three dots in the top corner. That’s the options button. Then go into Home Settings. From here, you’re going to find Apple Intelligence, and there’s going to be a toggle there to turn on to summarise videos. This will use Apple Intelligence to detect what’s happening in the video, and then you’ll get a more detailed summary in notifications and in that search feature I just showed you.

Then we can choose which camera to use this on. And again, it’s annoyingly limited. On my plan, I can only use it on one camera. So, if I tap on Cameras and Languages, I can then choose which camera it should work on. For me, it makes sense to use the front door camera. That’s where most people are coming and going, and where most cats appear, apparently. And then, once that camera’s been chosen, it’s going to start recording all of the events, and they’ll all become searchable very, very soon.

So check that out. And before you do, check out this QuickTip next.
